Stephen W. Marshall, Ph.D.
Associate Professor at East Tennessee State University in the Department of Communication
My research interests include communication effectiveness of message strategies and creative elements, audience analysis, brand communication and communication pedagogy. I am the acting Mass Communication Program Head. My books and monographs include, “Television Advertising that Works: An Analysis of Commercials from Effective Campaigns” (co-authored with Dr. Marilyn Roberts @ University of Florida), “Cultural Differences Reflected in Advertising Appeals: A Study of Print Magazines in the U.S. and France” (co-authored with my graduate student Ciprian Begu), and “The Status of Public Relations in Russia: A Country in Transition” (co-authored with my graduate student Inga L. Ragozina) are all available via Amazon.com. I conduct both qualitative and quantitative audience research. I lead an active service mission serving on numerous committees at ETSU. To help the community, I am a marketing board member of Bristol’s Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival. In addition, I serve as academic representative for the American Advertising Federation 7th District as well as the education chair of our local North East Tennessee chapter.
I’m an active creative and musician. I play bass (electric and doghouse) and love Americana music. I currently play with Wise Old River, These Undowners, The Bleeding Heart Show and the Chris Dula Experience.
